Nagaland CM arrives in in Manipur
Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday arrived in Manipur's Senapati district to attend a ceremony to launch a unit of his party Naga People's Front (NPF) Manipur unit, official reports from Senapati district said.
Rio accompanied by some his minister arrived at around 10 am at Senapati, about 45 km north of here, to launch a unit of his NPF party in Manipur, the reports said.
Official sources here said a strong team of Manipur police led additional director general of police V. Zathang was sent to Senapati district to prevent any untoward incident.
They said a provision of the constitution of NPF included bringing of all Nagas under 'one administrative unit' and this meant breaking of the territories of Manipur, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh since there is settlement of Nagas in these states.
Sources said all political parties in Manipur in a meeting had earlier decided to urge Rio to 'defer' his visit because of the provision in his party constitution.
Officials in Manipur secretariat also said state government had written to both Nagaland government and Union home ministry in regard to Rio's visit as his tour in Manipur may create communal tension. Major social organisation United Committee Manipur has opposed his visit and had called general strike on Saturday.
