Muzaffarnagar limps back to normal, curfew relaxed
Muzaffarnagar has started limping back to normal and curfew was relaxed for five hours on Wednesday.
One incident of stone pelting was reported from Baghpat in which about 25 persons have been arrested.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has said that free medical treatment will be provided to all those injured in the riots.
For those who lost their lives in the clashes, the chief minister has announced a compensation of `10 lakhs each to the family members and `50,000 each to those seriously injured.
Curfew had been clamped in three police stations following communal clashes in the district on Saturday.
The death toll in the riot-hit Muzaffarnagar district and adjoining towns has now gone up to 48 with some more bodies being recovered. IG (STF) Ashish Gupta confirmed only 38 deaths.
ADG (Law and Order) Arun Kumar described the situation as ‘tense but under control’.
Those who had fled their homes during the communal riots are still reluctant to return and the 10 relief camps set up are still home to about 10,000 people.
District magistrate Kaushal Raj said that day curfew would be relaxed and then withdrawn in a phased manner but night curfew was likely to continue for a few more days.
IG (law and order) R.K. Vishwakarma said that Army continued to patrol the troubled areas in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli and Meerut. “This is basically to instil a sense of confidence and security among the people,” he said. The police official said that nine companies of security personnel had been deployed in Shamli, five in Baghpat and two in Meerut as a precautionary measure. The strength of Army personnel deployed in the troubled districts has also been increased.
Meanwhile, according to the state home department, 975 persons have been arrested so far and 1,820 arms licences have been cancelled.
