Murali, Padmaja skip unveiling of statue
Thiruvananthapuram: Deceased Congress leader K. Karunakaran’s statue was unveiled by chief minister Oommen Chandy at the Town Hall here on Wednesday. The “leader” was a leader par excellence, the chief minister said during the ceremonial speech.
The bronze statue measures 10 feet, and was set up at a cost of `20 lakh. The sculptor was Kunnuvila Murali. Kannoth Karunak-aran, who passed away in 2010, had fallen out of favour with the party’s central leadership. His children, senior Congress leaders Padmaja Venugopal and K. Muralidharan, were conspicuous by their absence at the unveiling ceremony. They said no invitation had been extended to them – a reflection of the groupism in the state Congress party.
KPCC president Ramesh Chenithala took part in the function, in which co-operation minister C.N. Balakr-ishnan renamed the Thri-ssur Town Hall as K. Kar-unakaran Memorial Hall.
Therambil Ramakris-hnan MLA, presided over the function. Mayor A.P. Paul and P.C. Chacko, MP also participated.
