Is Munda closer to 3rd chance of CM post?
Tuesday’s agreement between the BJP and JMM in Jharkhand has brought Mr Arjun Munda, 42, closer to his third chance to become CM even as it makes way for the smooth exit of Mr Shibu Soren, 66 and frequently ailing, from the state’s politics. Mr Munda is currently MP from Jamshedpur and a national genral secretary of the BJP. A smiling and content-looking Shibu Soren, flanked by Mr Munda and BJP Jharkhand in-charge Karuna Shukla, said he would resign on May 25. “The rest of the government’s term would be divided 50-50 between us,” he told reporters after the meeting. “This government will run smoothly,” he said later. Mr Shibu Soren also offered his blessings to Mr Munda, asking him to “rule Jharkhand well”. But questions and doubts are already being raised over the viability of the JMM-BJP agreement. “The BJP, a national party, failed completely and dragged the stalemate for 21 days. If Soren agrees to resign, why on May 25 and why not today?” asked Opposition leader Rajendra Singh of the Congress.
The JVM, led by former CM Babulal Marandi, on Tuesday filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging Soren’s continuation as CM without being an MLA. “We will also challenge Arjun Munda’s appointment as CM because he is yet to become an MLA. Besides, a rotational government will make politics in Jharkhand a joke,” said Mr Marandi.
