Mumbai blasts: Police looks for man who asked for Metro
“Where will I get Metro,” was a question asked by an individual to a shopkeeper in Opera House on July 13.
The police believes this man to be the planter of one of the bombs that rocked Mumbai.
And it is on the basis of a description by this shopkeeper that Mumbai police created the sketch of the planter.
According to the sources, a middle-aged man on Wednesday evening approached a shop owner in Opera House and asked him from where he could board the Metro.
“This indicates that the person was not familiar with Mumbai. Further, it also shows that the person belonged to another city that had a Metro rail system in place,” said a source from the Mumbai police.
“On Thursday, a shopkeeper contacted one of the investigating agencies of Mumbai police and informed us about this person,” said the source, adding that the shopkeeper would have never imagined at that time that such a potentially harmless conversation would have such serious implications.
“The suspect should be either a resident of New Delhi or Kolkata, as these are the only two cities in India to have a functional Metro rail,” said the source.
Officers rushed to Kolkata and have zeroed in on a man named Haroon, who is suspected to be an IM operative.
Haroon was picked up in June by the West Bengal police. The investigators strongly believe that Haroon’s connections with sleeper cells and modules in Kolkata might have some hand in the Mumbai blast.
“There is a lot of focus on the modules from Kolkata since certain leads indicate that some of the men involved in the blasts could have come from there,” said the official.
Probe on right path?
