Mumbai BJP member hacked to death
A 52-year-old BJP party member was stabbed and hacked to death on Monday morning by one of his rivals at the former’s residence in Bhandup. The accused was caught a few hours later in the nearby forest where he had taken shelter. The police is probing the possibility of another person being involved in the murder.
Deceased Vasant Patil was at home with his wife Maya (46) at Jai Bhawani Chawl in Tembhipada at Raote Compound. “At around 6.30 am, Maya had gone to the bathroom and returned a few minutes later to find him lying in a pool of blood. He was taken to Aggrawal Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. There were around 28 to 30 stabs on his body,” said senior PI Shrirang Nadgauda of Bhandup police station. Patil was the local municipal ward president and was at loggerheads with Baban Tukaram Khopade. Maya and Vasant also have a daughter Kirti who is married and lives with her husband. After the murder, Khopade fled from the spot and took refuge in the nearby forest area where he was apprehended by the police following a tip-off. He was subsequently placed under arrest, when he said during questioning that he wanted to get even with the deceased after they had an argument. Sources also said Patil had filed several RTI applications which had exposed illegal constructions in Bhandup, including one such project undertaken by Khopade. The police, however, denied any such reason behind the murder. “We have not learnt anything about an RTI query or a illegal construction. Investigations are still underway,” said Mr Nadgauda.
