Mulayam: No govt in 2014 without us
With an eye on the 2014 general election, Samajwadi boss Mulayam Singh Yadav said Wednesday no party could form a government at the Centre without his help.
SP general secretary Mohan Singh said his party had taken the initiative to stitch up a Third Front, and urged regional parties opposed to the Congress and BJP to unite on a common platform. Virtually ruling out an alliance with Trinamul Congress, Mr Singh said: The “Trinamul Congress is an important regional party. But the problem is we’ve had traditional ties with the Left. In our difficult times, Harkishen Singh Surjeet and Jyoti Basu came to our help.” He was speaking after moving a draft political resolution at the SP’s two-day national executive meeting, which began here Wednesday.
Exhorting SP leaders to work tirelessly to send a large number of MPs to Parliament in the next election, Mr Yadav said: “In the present circumstances, the SP has to take on greater responsibility in national politics. The SP cannot remain confined to Uttar Pradesh. Make sure your party has a partnership in the next government in Delhi. If we have a share in the government at the Centre, SP will be able to spread its wings from Bengal to Punjab.”
Addressing the national executive’s opening session on Wednesday, Mr Yadav attacked both BJP and Congress, but it was the latter that bore the brunt of his attacks. The Congress, he said, was “neck deep” in scams. “The situation has come to such a pass that the morale of the Congress is at an all-time low.”
Mr Yadav claimed the condition of Muslims was even worse than of Scheduled Castes and Tribes. “Who set up the Sachar Committee? Manmohan Singh. The report is before him, but its recommendations haven’t been implemented.” He added: “By setting up committees, the government wants to confuse and fool people.”
