Mulayam calls meet of top officials, DGP not present
Samajwadi party president Mulayam Singh Yadav on Sunday convened a high-level meeting of political leaders, including chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, from his party and top government officials to discuss the situation in Muzaffarnagar.
DGP Devraj Nagar was not present in the meeting, giving rise to speculation about his removal from the top post.
According to sources, Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav is said to have expressed his anger at the inability of the state administration to control the situation. He said that if the officials had acted in time, the situation would not have spun out of control. Mr Yadav asked officials to ensure that no further violence takes place in the region and communal issues are resolved at the earliest. He also asked his ministers and legislators from, western UP to reach out to people in the rural interiors and check further escalation of communal tension. He directed the chief minister to initiate strict action against those responsible for the violent incidents and also take action against officials found to have shown laxity in taking action.
