MPs dare Anna to file FIRs
Team Anna has virtually consolidated the entire political community inside and outside Parliament after putting politicians in the dock at its Sunday fast in New Delhi.
While the Congress on Monday disapproved the language used by Team Anna against politicians, MPs and ministers said that this shows arrogance of Team Anna.
MPs are daring Anna Hazare and his team members to file an FIR against those politicians who they charge as “corrupt”.
The current mood in the political parties is not to give a privilege notice against Team Anna members for describing MPs as “looters”, “corrupt” and “rapists”. But the MPs can do so in their individual capacity.
Taking strong objection to the language used by the Team Anna members against parliamentarians during Mr Hazare’s day-long fast, the Congress on Monday accused them of trying to reduce the country’s institutions “to ruins”. Choosing not to make any direct attack on Mr Hazare, party spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, however, said the language used by the members of the civil society on Sunday reflected the “fundamentalism of righteousness” and demonstrated their “arrogance” and “disgust” towards Parliament and democracy.
He said that the Congress was not afraid of debates and dissent but also stands for the “dignity of discourse”.
“Though I speak on behalf of the Congress party. I express the sentiment cutting across party lines because this is the understanding of the entire political class. Just because people may not file a defamation suit, just because Parliament may not fully assert right to privilege, does not mean you call parliamentarians criminals and goondas,” Mr Singhvi said.
