Mountain corps will be active in 5 years
The Indian Army’s recently-approved Mountain Strike Corps will be a reality in about five years, and comprise around 95,000 troops to bolster defences in both the eastern sector and Ladakh to the north, sources said.
It will be a strong deterrent vis-vis China but could also be utilised in mountainous terrain in Jammu and Kashmir.
Sources also said the proposed deal for acquisition of ultra-light howitzers from the US was at an advanced stage. This will drastically boost the Army’s capabilities in moutain warfare. The new corps will be based at Panagarh in West Bengal.
