Mother caught throwing baby out of train
Passengers of a train caught a 38-year-old woman on Tuesday trying to throw out her newborn girl wrapped in a plastic bag.
Chitra of Ulundurpet, allegedly a sex worker, had delivered the baby on Monday night. Wanting to get rid of the baby, she reportedly took a train to Chengalpet and later switched to an EMU that goes to Beach station.
“She was holding a plastic bag from which moaning sounds were coming. Passengers initially thought it was a kitten.
But as the train neared Singaperumalkoil station, she was standing near the door when the passengers heard the cries of a baby and were horrified when she tried to throw the bag.
They dragged her in and took the baby away from her,” recalled co-passenger Lakshmi Raguram, a human rights activist.
Lakshmi took the woman to the Tambaram railway police and lodged a complaint against her.
She also took responsibility for Chitra and brought her and the baby to the human rights organisation office at Egmore.
Chitra, married at 19 and deserted by her husband, said she was living on the streets.
Men took advantage of her, but she did not want the baby, now named Krishnaveni.
