Mom sells infant for Rs 5,000

A woman, who gave birth at the government run-SAT hospital here, sold her newborn baby to a couple for Rs 5,000.
The deal was brokered by a sweeper of the prestigious hospital and came to light after the guilt-ridden mother returned and demanded her baby back on Thursday.
Curiously enough, the police has charged a case against the woman for abandoning the child but did not bother to register cases against the broker and the couple who bought the child. The woman, a native of Chadayamangalam, had given birth to the child on July 26 and had told the hospital staff that she could not take the baby back to her village since it was illegitimate.
She also said she was planning to hand over the baby to the child welfare centre.
The sweeper, who overheard this talk, sidled up to the woman and offered to find buyers for the child. Soon, she brought in a couple from the Neyyattinkara suburbs who took the baby after giving the mother Rs 5,000. However, the woman was castigated by her family when she reached home. Chastised, she came back and argued with the sweeper.

CCS meet mulls modernisation of armed forces
Age Correspondent
New Delhi

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) met on Thursday and is believed to have discussed several issues pertaining to modernisation of the armed forces including acquisition of another 42 Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force and construction of four indigenous stealth destroyers for the Navy at Indian shipyards.
The government is also expected to soon issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) for acquisition of technology for construction of six second-line submarines with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology for the Indian Navy. The government is also understood to be considering a proposal for augmentation of troop levels near the Sino-Indian border areas to bolster defence preparedness but it is unclear if this was discussed also at Thursday’s CCS meeting.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
