Molestation row rocks House
The molestation of a girl and attack on legislators rocked the Assam Assembly on Monday as the Speaker disallowed an adjournment motion asking for a debate on rising crime figure in the state. The AGP and BJP also staged a walkout demanding a debate on the same issue, but the Speaker refused to entertain the Opposition’s motion stating that issue was sub-judice.
Opposition AIUDF leader Sirajuddin Ajmal, who pressed the adjournment motion as soon as the House assembled, argued that the law and order situation had “totally broken down and the lives of women in the state are at stake”.
Raising the issue of attack on Congress legislator Rumi Nath by a mob in Karimganj and assault on members of Public Account Committee at Nagaon, the AIUDF legislators disrupted the House proceedings by creating a pandemonium.
Speaker Pranab Gogoi, who was not happy over pandemonium, overruled their argument and suspended the legislators from the proceeding of the House temporarily.
The legislators refused to accept the ruling of the Speaker and marshals were called to evict MLAs.
As uproarious scene continued in the House, the Speaker was forced to adjourn the House for 15 minutes. Soon after adjournment, parliamentary affairs minister Nilamoni Sen Deka moved a proposal to withdraw the suspension of AIUDF legislators which Speaker accepted.
Later, parliamentary affairs minister told the House that the adjournment motion could not be allowed as a case has already been registered and a statement of the victim taken while the government had also ordered an inquiry by the additional chief secretary.
