Modi won’t fight LS polls, feels Cong

While speculation of the BJP’s election campaign committee chief Narendra Modi contesting the Lok Sabha elections is refusing to die down in the political circles, the Congress officials are predicting that he may not fight.

“Narendra Modi will not fight the Lok Sabha elections but will prefer to become a Rajya Sabha member,” a member of the Congress Working Committee and the party’s “think-tank”, said on Tuesday. He further said that this is because Mr Modi wants to remain free for the election campaigning.
He could contest a Lok Sabha byelection or become a Rajya Sabha member like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh or Mr H.D. Deve Gowda who became PM without fighting the Lok Sabha seat.
Earlier, there were reports that Mr Modi will fight the Lok Sabha elections from two seats — one from his home state Gujarat and another from Uttar Pradesh — with a calculation that this will increase the BJP’s numbers in the two states. And such reports were coming from the BJP camp.
But a senior BJP leader said he had no idea whether the Gujarat chief minister will be fighting the Lok Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.
If the Congress insiders are to be believed, BJP veteran L.K. Advani will not contest from Gujarat this time fearing that Mr Modi could play a game with him. “Advaniji will shift to Madhya Pradesh,” they said.
“Modi has not been comfortable with Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Rajasthan BJP chief Vasundhara Raje because of their stature. Moreover, they are not depending on Modi to win the Assembly polls in these states. But they can create problems for Modi in his bid to become the Prime Minister. This is why his role in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan elections need to be watched,” they said.
