UP MLAs missing, wanted in House
They were elected with much fanfare in the 2007 Assembly elections. They arrived in their Sunday best to take the oath but after that, they have almost gone missing and are now in the “wanted” list.
More than a dozen MLAs in the UP Assembly have not found the time to attend the sessions of the state Assembly and that too, without any valid reason.
Ajai Rai, the former BJP MLA who was re-elected in a by-election as an Independent MLA from Kolasala in Varanasi, is a prominent absentee. He has not attended five of the seven sessions convened by the Mayawati government in the past three years.
The legislator remains unavailable for comment but his supporters say that he prefers to spend time working in his constituency than wasting time in the Assembly where, in any case, “no constructive business is conducted”.
Similarly Premlata Devi, the BJP MLA from Aligarh, is another permanent absentee in the Assembly. Premlata, who is also former BJP leader Kalyan Singh’s daughter-in-law, is said to stay away form the state Assembly to escape the embarrassment she would have to face form her colleague since her father-in-law Kalyan Singh and husband Rajvir Singh have formed another political party and she is the only family member who remains in BJP.
Ashok Yadav , another Independent MLA from Ferozabad, is also said to be busy with politics in Delhi and has rarely been seen attending the Vidhan Sabha in Lucknow. Guddu Pandit and Naved Kazim (both BSP) are also said to be too busy to attend the session. And even if they do come, it is only for a few minutes.
Anand Sen Yadav, Jamuna Prasada Nishad, Chandra Bhadra Singh and Shekhar Tiwari (all BSP) are forced to remain absent from the Assembly sessions since they are lodged in jail and have not been given permission to attend the sessions.
Yogendra Sagar (BSP) and Vijay Misra (SP) have not been attending the sessions since they have been declared absconders by the court.
Majority of the women legislators prefer to spend their time in the restroom than inside the Vidhan Sabha.
