MLAs against opening of bars
Legislators across party lines in the Legislative Council on Tuesday resolved that dance bars would remain banned in the state. Though the legislators refrained from making comments on the SC judgment, they all demanded that the state either draft a new law, which will not violate constitutional rights or file a review petition in the SC.
State home minister R.R. Patil assured that the future course of action to continue the dance bar ban would be decided in three weeks after studying the SC order. The Legislative Council was adjourned for the day “to send a strong message” that all parties in the state are in favour of the ban.
Explaining the state government’s stand on the SC order, Mr Patil told the legislative council, “We have still not received the order copy of the SC judgment. Once we receive the copy, a panel of law experts and senior members of the state legislature will study it after which we will decide whether to file a review petition or demand a full bench on the issue or make amendments to the law.” The Assembly session will end on August 2.
Though the Opposition members criticised the government for facing embarrassment in courts on regular basis, all of them supported the ban on dance bars. Shiv Sena legislator advocate Anil Parab alleged that the bureaucrats were hand-in-glove with the dance bar lobby and therefore erroneous draft of the law was made intentionally so that it does not stand the scrutiny of judiciary.
