Mini zoos being ignored
Hyderabad: Mini zoos, be they private or government-run, suffer utter neglect across the state, with the forest department taking care of only major zoos.
The Himayatsagar mini zoo and the deer parks at Shamirpet and other areas are ill-maintained, alleged wildlife activists.
“None of these mini zoos have proper facilities for the visitors. There are no funds given to them. The entire focus of the forest department is only on tje Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati zoos,” Ravi Kumar a wildlife activist said.
Similarly, there are around a dozen mini-zoos recognised by the Central Zoo Authority that are in dire need of upgradation as medium zoos.
According to state zoos director Mallikarjuna Rao, most of the mini-zoos are deer parks. “The Zoo Authority of AP has chosen the small Warangal zoo for development. We are also developing the park situated in three acres by adding sloth bear enclosures besides adding ostrich and emu birds,” he said.
