Metro third reach work starts today
Kochi: The work on the third reach of Kochi Metro from Jawaharlal Nehru stadium at Kaloor to Madhava Pharmacy will start on Wednesday.
Soma Constructions which is to take up the work is expected to conduct soil testing. It has already brought equipment and will begin work on Wednesday morning. Sources in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said that it did not expect the 12-hour hartal called by the Left Democratic Front to affect the starting of the work.
Officials of Delhi-based Era Infra Engineering held talks with the DMRC officials about starting the Metro construction works on the fourth reach between South Junction and Pettah. “The work was supposed to have started this week itself.
But officials informed us that there will be a delay in bringing the heavy machinery. Now the work will start early next month,” they said. Metroman E. Sreedharan inspected sites at South railway station and Pettah and held discussions with the construction firm officials.
At a meeting here on Tuesday with the district administration and traffic polic officials, it was decided to allow DMRC resume work on July 19 to locate the underground utility lines on the busy MG Road.
After failing twice, DMRC has been given the nod to restart work on July 19, this time blocking traffic on a small stretch near Shenoy’s Junction and digging up more widely leading to complete closure of the road in that area.
“We’ll dig deeper and wider near Little Kingdom showroom. The traffic might be disrupted at the stretch from Friday mid-night. Only after locating the cables can we proceed with works at crucial strech,” sources said.
