Meira meets Ahmadinejad, discusses ties

In a sign of upswing in India-Iran relations, Lok Sabha Speaker on Saturday met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran and agreed to bolster bilateral ties in diverse fields. Ms Kumar is currently leading an Indian parliamentary delegation to Iran.
“Both sides agreed on the need to further strengthen the bilateral relations in various fields including political, economic and cultural fields,” said a statement from the Speaker’s office.
Ms Kumar also held talks with her Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani, and members of the India-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group. The Speaker’s visit to Iran came weeks after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh met Mr Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York in September and accepted an invitation from him to visit Tehran. The meeting underlined a warming of ties between New Delhi and Tehran.

GUJARAT riot witness KILLED
Ahmedabad, Nov. 5: A witness in the 2002 Naroda Patiya riot case was on Saturday allegedly stabbed to death by some unidentified men here, the police said.
The assailants stabbed Nadeem Ahmed Sayed with sharp weapons at Juhapura area and fled, they said.
He was rushed to V.S. Hospital where he was declared brought dead, the police said.
Sayed, a Congress worker, was a witness in the Naroda Patiya riot case in which 95 people were killed on February 28, 2002 during the communal violence that erupted after the Godhra train burning incident.
The court where the trial in case was on had recorded Sayed’s statements a couple of months back.
Sources close to Sayed said he was also a police informer in some cases and his murder had some connection with the clash between slaughter house owners and police early this week where two policemen were injured and a police jeep was torched by a mob.
Sayed, who was also a Right to Information activist, had raised many RTI queries on the Godhra riots and related incidents.
