Maya will seek UP trifurcation

In a master stroke, UP chief minister Mayawati is now preparing to convene a brief special session of the state legislature early next month to pass a resolution seeking trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh.

Highly-placed sources said that though the session was being convened to pass a vote-on-account for `35,000 crores for the period April 2012 to July 2012 to enable the next government to remain functional till its passes its own budget for the next financial year, a resolution for trifurcation is also to be passed in the session.
The resolution seeking creation of Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and Harit Pradesh is apparently designed in view of the upcoming elections and the BSP want to be seen as a party that did maximum spade work for creation of these states.
Barring the Samajwadi Party, which has been opposing further division of Uttar Pradesh, all other parties have supported separate states in eastern, western and the Bundelkhand region but no effective steps have been taken for the same.
“The Congress, BJP and RLD have been taking votes from these regions but have not taken any steps for creation of smaller states. By passing the resolution, Ms Mayawati will prove that it is the BSP alone that is sincere on the issue and if there is any further delay, it will be because of parties at the centre, namely Congress and BJP,” said a senior BSP minister.
Congress MLA Vivek Singh who represents the Banda seat in the state assembly, meanwhile, said that passing a resolution at the end of the government’s tenure proves that the BSP is merely interested in lip service.
