Maya open to probe by CBI
UP chief minister Mayawati has said that she was not averse to a CBI inquiry into the Lakhimpur rape and murder case, but apprehended that if given to the CBI, it may mess up the case like it did with the Aarushi case.
“If the family members of the victim want the CBI to probe the case, I have no objection but I also have no faith in the CBI,” she said at a press conference here on Wednesday. The chief minister added that her government would ensure stern action against the accused.
The chief minister said that the Centre was using the various commissions as tools to further their political interests.
“This trend is not healthy for democracy. I strongly criticise this tendency and if the commissions are so keen on taking up such cases, they should look into cases in Delhi which is right under their nose. Why do they not investigate cases of crime against women in Delhi?” she asked.
Ms Mayawati said that previous governments in Uttar Pradesh were responsible for encouraging criminals for monetary and political gains.
“The previous governments have misused the state machinery and made it insensitive. This is a legacy that my government has received and it will take time to set it right,” she said.
