Maya announces support for food security scheme

BSP president Mayawati said on Saturday that she supports the food security bill “in principle” but she did not favour the centre’s decision to bringing the scheme into effect through an ordinance.

“We favour the food security bill and we want the poor to get food at a subsidised rate. But, instead of bringing it through an ordinance, the Centre should have brought the bill in Parliament and allowed a debate. It is still not too late for this,” she told reporters on Saturday.
Earlier this month, the central government rushed through an ordinance that has to be now ratified within six weeks of its tabling in Parliament. The BSP’s support to be bill in Parliament may be crucial for the government.
