Mango named Nirbhaya in UP
In another honour to the Delhi gangrape victim Nirbhaya, a new variety of mango in Malihabad, on the outskirts of Lucknow, has been named after the girl who was raped and brutalised on the roads of Delhi on December 16 and died 11 days later.
Kalimullah, a well known mango grower, who is also a recipient of the Padma Shri, has developed a new variety of mango and named it Nirbhaya.
“I developed this variety three years ago and this is the first season in which the tree has given fruits. The size of this variety is small and I dedicate it to the brave girl by naming it Nirbhaya,” he said.
Kalimullah’s name figures in the Guinness Book of World Records for growing 300 varieties of mangoes on a single tree. “It is not merely a tree but it is a full blown orchard and also a veritable laboratory that can be of immense use to researchers,” he said.
Kalimullah’s magic tree that bears 300 varieties of mangoes is his most treasured tree and every fruit has a tiny tin label of identification on its pale green pedicle. The names are as fascinating as the mangoes themselves — the heart-shaped Asl-ul-Muqarrar, the bright red Husn-e-Ara, the bitter gourd-like Karela, Kelwachampa, Sharbati Bagrain, Pukhraj, Walajah Pasand, Khas-ul-Khas, Makkhan, Shyam Sunder, Prince and Himsagar, to name a few.
He has earned the name of “Mango Man” and his saplings have made their way to Rashtrapati Bhawan too.
Kalimullah, incidentally, is fond of naming the new varieties of mangoes after celebrities.
He has named mangoes after Sonia Gandhi, Sachin Tendulkar, Aishwarya Rai, Nargis, Jahanara and Akhilesh Yadav.
