Man in hurry jumps off plane
Those who arrived by the Air India 906 flight from Dubai Monday morning faced some tense moments soon after touchdown as an anxious passenger jumped through the emergency exit even as the pilots were getting ready to open the doors.
The first-of-its-kind incident occurred at 5.45 am in parking bay number 31.
After a safe landing, the aircraft taxied to the parking bay. As other passengers readied to disembark, mechanical engineer Kamal Basha Fahith Ahmed, 23, occupying the 28-D seat, suddenly opened the emergency exit.
He overpowered the two airhostesses who tried to restrain him and jumped out. The 15-foot jump caused him minor injuries.
The pilots immediately alerted airport and airline security, which caught Mr Ahmed near the runway.
After initial inquiry by airline security and CISF, he was handed over to Chennai Police and booked under IPC sections 350 (intentionally using force) and 366 (endangering life or personal safety of others).
The Tiruchy resident was later produced before a magistrate and sent to Puzhal Central Prison.
Mr Ahmed was apparently depressed after quitting his four-month-old job in Dubai.
“The passenger disrupted normal activity at the airport. He could have been in a hurry or it could be a case of imbalance in mind. We have not seen such an incident here in the past few decades,” said a senior airport official.
