Man castrated in Uttar Pradesh jail, probe launched
A 24-year-old man, who was allegedly assaulted and castrated by his two co-prisoners in Mainpuri district jail in Uttar Pradesh, was on Thursday shifted to the general ward after surgery at a hospital here, police said.
"Rajeev was attacked and was admitted to S.N. Medical College (in Agra) on Wednesday. This morning, he has been shifted to the general ward. The DIG (deputy inspector general) visited the jail on Wednesday, and an inquiry is under way," Jail Superintendent R.K. Singh told on phone from Mainpuri, some 75 km from here.
Jail authorities said Rajeev, a resident of Mainpuri, had committed the cut on himself out of guilt, but added that an inquiry was on.
Rajeev's cousin Babloo Yadav, however, told IANS: "How is it possible when they do not permit anyone with anything inside the jail premises, not even blades or knives? He was attacked by some people within the jail."
"Rajeev was booked by police some days ago for his alleged involvement with a girl. Those people had warned him of dire consequences," Yadav said.
Doctors at the S.N. Medical College said Rajeev was out of danger, but would take some time to recover.
His family has denied his involvement with any girl and said he was in Lucknow for an examination.
