Man arrested for step-daughter rape
The Cuffe Parade police has arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly raping his 13-year-old stepdaughter for over a period of two months.
The matter came into light on May 5 when the girl consumed insecticide over a quarrel with her mother and was admitted to a hospital. During examination, doctors discovered injuries on her private parts and informed the police. The victim then revealed that her stepfather raped her on different occasions and also threatened her with dire consequences if she told anybody about it. The accused was then arrested.
The arrested accused, Ranjan Laxman Ramnathkar, sells fish at Sasoon Docks. Ramnathkar married the victim’s mother, who had separated from her first husband and lived with her two daughters, around seven years ago. The victim, a class 9 student, lives with her family in a slum area in Cuffe Parade.
“In the statement given to the police, the victim had told that she was raped by Ramnathkar over a period of two months. We immediately arrested him,” said Janardan Kharat, senior inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.
Mr Kharat added that the victim had informed her mother about her plight, but the latter did not believe her. This resulted in a fight between mother and daughter, following which the victim consumed Phenol.
According to the police, she was rushed to the St George Hospital and admitted immediately. Sources said that while in the hospital, the victim suddenly experienced pain in her private parts and began bleeding. The nurses then took her into confidence after which the victim opened up.
