Mamata: UPA trying to sell the country

Launching a scathing attack against the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that it was trying to sell the country.

Ms Banerjee reminded the people that the Trinamul Congress sacrificed ministerial berths at the Centre by pulling out of the UPA when it tried to introduce the FDI in multibrand retail. “They increased the price of petrol 50 times. After the next Lok Sabha election you will have to pay `900 for every LPG cylinder instead of the present subsidised price of `450. And all the money will go to the Congress party fund. The Congress is trying to sell the country,” she added.
Ms Banerjee was addressing an election rally in Hooghly district. Several ministers including Firhad Hakim and MPs like Kalyan Banerjee were present on the stage.
The chief minister again slammed the Centre for not providing either a special economic package or a moratorium in interest payment for three years to West Bengal. She repeated her charge that the Centre was deducting `25,000 crore every year as interest on the money which the Left Front had borrowed. She also voiced her displeasure over the Centre’s collecting `40,000 crore every year from the state as income tax, customs duty et al. She hinted that she may pursue a legal course over the matter.
The chief minister once again blamed the state election commission for the panchayat polls being held in the month of Ramazan. Thursday was the first day of the fasting and Ms Banerjee offered her greetings to the Muslims on the occasion.
Voicing her happiness over the Supreme Court’s advice to Tata Motors to consider surrendering its rights over the Singur land because the Nano plant had already been shifted to Gujarat and “agriculturists must survive”.
