Mamata pays tribute to Basu
Shedding the politics of “us” and “them”, the Mamata Banerjee government on Friday observed former chief minister Jyoti Basu’s 98th birth anniversary.
The chief minister herself paid her homage to the Marxist stalwart by garlanding Basu’s photograph at the Writers’ Buildings. Here again she stole a march over the CPI(M). Basu died on December 10, 2009 and his 97th birth anniversary fell on July 8, 2010 but it did not occur to the then chief minister and Basu’s successor Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to observe it at the state secretariat.
The then Speaker of the state Assembly, Hashim Abdul Halim, however, had organised a Jyoti Basu Memorial Lecture in the Assembly to commemorate his 97th birth anniversary. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee had delivered the lecture on the occasion which was attended by among others the then chief minister.
