Mamata launches attack on media
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday once again launched a scathing attack against the media: this time for blaming her government for the suspension of screening of Bengali movie Teen Kanya at Star Theatre. Posting her diatribe against a section of the media, Ms Banerjee said that it was raising non-issues for its own vested interests. “Their sole purpose is to malign the present government with disinformation, misinformation and concocted stories. It is in collusion with political parties like CPI(M) and Congress,” she wrote in her Facebook page.
Only a week ago, Ms Banerjee had lambasted the media for blowing up the Haldia incident. Although three senior officials of a private cargo operator ABG Haldia Bulk Terminals were abducted and forced to leave Haldia at gun-point, Ms Banerjee had insisted that nothing had happened in Haldia. But only a day later, the ABG pulled out of Haldia leaving her red-faced. She was again left embarrassed when the Kolkata Municipal Corporation-owned Star Theatre pulled out the movie and its director was told that it was being done because of its anti-government content.
The chief minister on Monday said that her opposition to the “economic reforms” initiated by the Congress-led central government has prompted “vested interests” to run a malicious campaign against her. “You may wonder what would be the motive of this section of the so-called media to plant such stories without any basis. Our ministers resigned from the Union government as a mark of protest against the introduction of FDI in multi-brand retail and pension sector.”
