Mamata gives 72-hr deadline to GJM chief
Declaring the ongoing indefinite bandh in Darjeeling as “illegal and unconstitutional”, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday gave a 72-hour deadline to the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to withdraw it or face the music.
Armed with the recent Calcutta high court order against the bandh in the Hills, Ms Banerjee warned that the government would take strong action if the GJM leadership did not call off the bandh.
“I have tolerated this for eight days but enough is enough. Now we will be forced to take strong action,” she said, adding that she had some constitutional obligations to abide by and high court had also given a clear order to restore normalcy in Darjeeling.
The chief minister said that she had taken slew of measures for development in the Hills and would not allow the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leadership which was fast losing popularity to ruin her good work.
Unfazed by her warning, Mr Gurung rejected her demand and even warned of bloodshed if the government tried to forcibly foil it.
He asked her to withdraw her ultimatum and threatened to impose what he called was “people’s curfew” in the hills.
