Mamata: Give up CPM allegiance
The Mamata Banerjee government has asked a section of doctors, teachers, professors and fire brigade officials to give up their allegiance to the CPI(M). It has warned them that if they do not, then they will have to face strong protest. The state government issued this warning while defending former Trinamul Congress MLA Arabul Islam over the recent Bhangor College fracas in which a lady professor Debjani De had alleged that Mr Islam who is also the president of the college’s governing body flung a water jug on her. In its bid to defend the indefensible, the government fielded a tenant of Prof. De.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee did not make any comment on the issue and she entrusted senior party leader and state panchayat affairs minister Subrata Mukherjee to tackle it. Replying to a specific question at the Writers’ Buildings on Friday, the chief minister said: “You (the journalists) are preparing all the reports without any verification. If any such incident happens, the government will take proper action.”
Virtually blaming the victim, Mr Mukherjee said that persons in such exalted position should not behave in politically partisan manner.
“According to my information, in Bhangor College, Arabul and the professor had a heated exchange of words but nothing else happened,” Mr Mukherjee claimed.
