Mamata cancels roadshow after disaster
Chief minister and Trinamul Congress candidate for Bhowanipore byelection Mamata Banerjee postponed her scheduled roadshow in the constituency on
Tuesday because of her visit to the earthquake-hit North Bengal and Sikkim. “I have been forced to cancel my election rally on Tuesday. I offer my
apologies to my brothers and sisters in Bhowanipore about this decision. Now I will reschedule my meeting for Thursday,” she added.
Ms Banerjee who led a padyatra in four wards of Bhowanipore on Saturday evening, was scheduled to organise another roadshow in the remaining four
wards on Tuesday. “For Didi, standing by the side of earthquake victims is far more important than the poll campaign,” the party president and
state PWD minister Subrata Bakshi said.
So far she has participated in only one poll campaign programme. It is her party leaders who have been campaigning on her behalf. In any case, Ms
Banerjee surely is not worried about a victory. Mr Bakshi who contested the Bhowanipore seat in the Assembly polls, had won by nearly 50,000 votes.
He resigned to pave the way for Ms Banerjee’s election.
