Maha top cop sets self afire, battling for life
An additional director-general of police in Maharashtra, R.K. Sahaya, allegedly set himself on fire at his residence in Malabar Hill during the early hours of Sunday. The high-ranking officer is said to have suffered 50 per cent burns.
According to police sources, the 52-year-old officer took the extreme step at his first floor residence in Avanti Apartments at around 12.15 am. His wife R.R. Sahaya rushed him to the Bombay Hospital, where he is currently battling for his life.
According to Dr V. Jacob and Dr Amita S. Hiremath at the Bombay Hospital, he is admitted to the ICU, but is not in a condition to give a statement to the police yet.
Mr Sahaya is presently posted as the head of Maharashtra State Police Housing Corporation. He was posted here recently and was previously working as chief vigilance officer of the MSRTC.
Deputy commissioner of police, Zone II, Nisar Tamboli said, “We are waiting to record statements of Mr Sahaya and his family members. No case has been registered yet.
Another officer added, “It’s not clear why he took the extreme step. As of now, we have not found any suicide note.” However, speculation is rife that Mr Sahaya was under tremendous pressure after filing a report to the state anti-corruption bureau against his former senior, IAS Deepak Kapoor.
Mr Sahaya was allegedly miffed because Mr Kapoor was posted as his senior. An IPS officer also suggested that it had something to do with his posting in the IPS cadre.
