Lucknow EVMs safe despite water seepage
The electronic voting machines of constituencies of Lucknow district were found to be safe after water from an overhead tank seeped into the strongroom at the Government Technical Institute in Lucknow on Saturday night.
The EVMs kept in the room that got waterlogged belonged to the Sarojini Nagar and Mohanlaganj constituencies.
The strongroom in which the EVMs were kept was opened Sund-ay after getting the Election Commission’s permission and in the presence of the candidates of all parties.
Two EC observers, Dr Arvinder Singh and Mr Aseem Khurana, and other officials who went in to inspect the room later said the EVMs were safe and that the water or moisture had not touched them as they were kept on a raised platform.
Reports on Saturday night had said a security guard had noticed water flowing out from beneath the door of the strongroom and immediately informed senior officials, who rushed to the site. A number of candidates also reached the GIT on getting news of the seepage.
On Sunday morning, several candidates and district officials again reached the GIT and inspected the room, though the seal of the lock could not be opened without the EC’s permission.
Water supply to the overhead tank was, meanwhile, disconnected and the water on the floor outside was also mopped up.
