LS uproar over caste census

The Lok Sabha witnessed unruly scenes and had to be adjourned after the Yadav troika, including SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, expressed concern over the caste census to be conducted in 2011.

The Yadav troika demanded that Union home minister P. Chidambaram make a statement in the House clarifying whether the caste census, scheduled to start in June, would include information on educational, social and economic background of the citizens. Many parties including CPI(M), JD(S), BJD, TDP and TMC endorsed their demand.
After listening to the leaders of various political parties, leader of the house and finance minister Pranab Mukherjee said that he had got the sense of the House and would take an appropriate decision after considering their views. He said the government would look into the ingredients suggested by the MPs for the caste census format.
Earlier, Mr Chidambaram too said that the decision to hold the caste census was mentioned in the Budget 2011-12 speech delivered on Monday.
He said the members should send their views on the format of the caste census to the government. However, this failed to pacify the Samajwadi Party and JD(U) members, who rushed to the well of the house and raised slogans forcing the Speaker Meira Kumar to adjourn the Lok Sabha.
Earlier, the Question Hour too was disrupted after SAD members rushed to the well asking the government to order a judicial probe in the Sikh killings in Rewari, Haryana. Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj too expressed concern on the issue. The AIADMK members too followed suit stating that the phones of party leader J. Jayalalitha were being tapped in the election bound Tamil Nadu. Party MP M Thambidurai wanted the union home minister to make a statement on the issue.
