London ready to shine
London was abuzz with excitement just a few hours away from hosting the opening ceremony to launch its third Olympic Games on Friday.
“We are as ready as can be, there will be last-minute hitches in an event of this scale but I am sure it will be terrific and we are going to do fine,” British culture and Olympic secretary Jeremy Hunt told this newspaper a few hours before the opening ceremony.
The sunny weather of the last few days gave way to grey skies and rain in the morning, but the weather forecasts have promised clear skies and dry weather for the opening ceremony, named the Isles of Wonder and directed by Danny Boyle.
“My biggest worry was the weather,” Mr Hunt said. “I have been listening to weather forecasts and it seems that this rain is going to clear by this evening. For once, I want to believe those weather forecasts,” Mr Hunt said.
The organisers are not worried about the comparisons with the opening of the Beijing Olympics, directed by Zhang Yimou. “We are going to have a fantastic Olympics, but it will be different to the Beijing Olympics. That was a superb Olympics, this will be superb. That was superb in a Chinese way, this will be superb in a British way,” Mr Hunt told this newspaper.
