Lokayukta indicts UP minister
The Uttar Pradesh Lokayukta has written to UP chief minister Mayawati, recommending action against minister for minority welfare, Anees Ahmad Khan a.k.a. Phool Babu for misappropriation of legislators’ funds.
Lokayukta N.K. Mehrotra, has also recommended action against the chief development officer (CDO) of Pilibhit, who allegedly connived with the minister in bungling of funds.
The Lokayukta has found the minister guilty of giving `94 lakhs to Shafi Khan Memorial Muslim Educational Society, of which his wife Malka Begum is the chief trustee and his brother Aqueel Ahmad is deputy manager.
The Society runs three educational institutions in Pilibhit. The Lokayukta, in his letter to the chief minister, has pointed out that the funds were released in 2007-2008 and the then CDO, Surendra Singh had conveniently overlooked facts and had released the amount to the society.
As per rules, a legislator cannot give more than `25 lakhs to any institution and the Lokayukta has recommended that the excess amount of `69 lakhs should be recovered from the society and the CDO should be made to face punitive action. Besides, a legislator is not allowed to grant monetary benefits to any institution run by him or his family.
“It is now up to the chief minister to initiate action against the minister in question. The Lokayukta has explained the case to the chief minister in his letter and it is up to the CM to decide on the punishment,” said an official in the Lokayukta’s office.
