Leaders welcome gangrape verdict

Political leaders on Friday welcomed the death sentence awarded to the four rape convicts in the Delhi gangrape case, saying that the punishment would serve as a deterrent against heinous crimes.

Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, talking to reporters in Mumbai said, “This was the rarest of rare crime...Damini and her family have got justice. I welcome the court ruling. The ‘nyay devta’ has set a new example for such culprits that if you commit such a heinous crime, then you will get a stringent punishment.” He further said, “There was an atmosphere in the country after this incident. We expected such a punishment.”
Rejecting the charge of the defence counsel A.P. Singh that the judgment was delivered under political pressure he said, “The judiciary follows the law and not political pressure.”
Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit too expressed her happiness over the verdict. She said, “I welcome the judgment. Justice has prevailed. The fast track court has delivered the justice expeditiously. I hope that the judgement would prove to be a deterrent.”
Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan too said, “It shall act as a deterrent against heinous crimes.”
Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan said that the verdict would serve as a warning and deterrent to others. He said, “Nobody will dare do such heinous crime in future.”
Union Minister of state for home R.P.N. Singh said that justice has been done to the victim “Justice has been done. (I) agree with the judge there has to be zero tolerance for such crimes. That is the message that has gone out with this sentence”, he said.
The Saket fast-track court in the afternoon had awarded death sentence to the convicts named Akshay Thakur, Vinay Sharma, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta — in the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student inside a private bus in New Delhi on December 16, 2012.
