Kolkata teen is found dead, possibly raped

A teenaged girl was found murdered near her house in Howrah within hours of being reported missing on Tuesday morning. Her family alleged that she was raped before being hacked to death.

The Class 11 student of Sitalchak High School had left her home in Bagnan to attend private tuition at around 7 am. When she did not return, her brother went out to search for her. At around 1 pm, the 16-year-old’s body was found lying in a pool of blood at a paddy field on the banks of river Damodar at Panshila village. The spot was around 500 feet away from the girl’s house. Multiple marks of deep injuries were spotted on the body. The police was informed.
A family member claimed that two youth were seen around the field suspiciously after the girl had gone missing. The victim’s relatives further alleged that a local youth was disturbing her recently. Local Congress MLA Asit Mitra protested the gruesome murder and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits. Superintendent of police (Howrah rural) Bharat Lal Meena said, “It appears that the girl was murdered. We are waiting to receive an official complaint. The post-mortem report will reveal if the victim was raped or not.”
