Kolkata: Local train derails, no casualties
Passengers had a close shave on Sunday afternoon when two coaches of a local train derailed in Kolkata, disrupting train services in the south section of Sealdah division for several hours. The accident took place at around 12.10 pm near Ballygunge Station.
The 34129 Up Budge Budge local had left platform no. 3 of Ballygunge Station for Sealdah station when soon a deafening sound filled the air along with smoke. The train stopped. The last two compartments (no. 10 and 11), including one reserved for women, were found to be out of the track, according to the passengers and local residents.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the derailment occured when the train was passing through a point beneath Bijon Setu. A stretch of the track was damaged as an impact of the derailment. The overhead electric line was also snapped.
A female passenger reportedly got injured when she jumped out of one of the coaches, out of fear.
She was hospitalised. The Eastern Railway (ER), however, informed that no one was injured. The mishap stalled train movement along the Up and Down tracks at Ballygunge Station from 12.14 pm.

Yesteryear wrestler and actor Dara Singh, who suffered a massive cardiac arrest, remained in a “critical condition” on Sunday at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH), doctors said.
“He is still extremely critical and on ventilator. He is on a high dose of medication to support his blood pressure. We hope to see some improvement through the day,” said Dr Ram Narain, chief operating officer at KDAH on Sunday, adding, “But we will continue to keep a watch on him.”
Singh’s son actor Vindu Dara Singh said, “He is serious and still unconscious. We are not sure what has happened...there is either a blood clot in his brain or he has suffered a heart attack. We have been told that he is under observation for 24 hours.”
The 83-year-old actor was admitted to KDAH on Saturday evening under accidental emergency.
