Khurshid heads to crisis-hit Nepal
External affairs minister Salman Khurshid heads for constitutional crisis-hit Nepal on Tuesday in what will be his first visit to the country since taking over the reins of his ministry.
However, the important visit which was originally slated to be for two days has now been curtailed to a day-long trip.
His visit is aimed at extending India’s support for the electoral process for the Constituent Assembly, elections to which are now slated for November 19. India is hoping that these take place as scheduled to bring some political stability in its neighbouring country.
Mr Khurshid’s visit to Nepal will also mark the first high-level visit from India ever since the Constituent Assembly was dissolved in late May. Its failure to frame a new constitution within the given time limit threw the country into a fresh round of political and constitutional turmoil.
The minister will have a bilateral meeting with Nepalese minister for home and foreign affairs Madhav Prasad Ghimire. He will also be meeting chairman of the council of ministers and the head of the interim government Khil Raj Regmi.
Mr Khurshid will also be calling on Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav apart from meeting the leaders of the main political parties in the country. However, the minister will not be meeting Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, who is said to be away in Singapore.
