Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi shed tears in Tihar

In the wake of the Supreme Court denying bail to Rajya Sabha MP Ms Kanimozhi, her father and DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Tuesday had a tearful meeting with her at the Tihar jail.

His third wife Rajathi Ammal and son and Union minister Mr M.K. Alagiri accompanied him. This is the octogenarian’s second visit to Tihar within a month’s time.

According to sources, Mr Karunanidhi, who reached Tihar at 4:45 pm, had a one-on-one with his daughter for 20 minutes.

He broke down on seeing her but soon regained composure. Then Rajathi Ammal and Mr Alagiri joined them. Rajathi Ammal also broke down during the meeting, sources said.

Former ministers Durai Murugan, Ponmudi, A V Velu and the personal secretary of the DMK leader, Mr Shanmuganathan also joined them.

During the meeting, former telecom minister A. Raja and managing director of Kalaignar TV, Mr Sharad Kumar were also present along with Kanimozhi, who has been in jail for about a month now in connection with the 2G case. The meeting lasted about 40 minutes.

Earlier, Union ministers Alagiri and Dayanidhi Maran, ministers of state Palanimanickam and Jegatratchagan, besides DMK floor leader in the Lok Sabha T R Balu and a few party Ps received Mr Karunanidhi at the airport when he arrived from Chennai.

Unlike last time, there were no Congress callers on him now. He is likely to return to Chennai on Wednesday.
