Karnataka State bags COMEDK honours

Bengaluru: Like last year, all the engineering candidates who appeared for the Under Graduate Entrance Test (UGET) conducted by the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMEDK) have cleared the exam. Neeli Devee Krishna Sasidhar M, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, stood first in the Medical stream.
The second and third ranks were taken by Bengaluru-based Hemanth Amardeep Santhooram and Harini Sheshadri. All the top ten engineering ranks, however, went to students from Karnataka, with Abhijeet Shenoi standing first.

According to A S Shrikanth, chief executive, COMEDK, as many as 82,262 candidates appeared for the examination, an increase of around 5,000 from the previous year. Around 49%.(40,578) of the candidates appeared for medical and dental seats and 16,695 of them (41%) have qualified for participation in the seat selectionprocess. 7,560 more candidates than last year have become eligible in the medical and dental streams. “41684 candidates appeared for engineering seats and all of them have been assigned ranks,” he informed.
Shrikanth also said that three of the top ten rank holders in the medical and dental streams are also from the state. “From the top 50 ranks in each stream, 22 medical students and 44 of the engineering candidates are from Karnataka; The first 41 medical rank holders are in the top 100 all-India bracket, with 85 from the engineering stream.”
In all, 28% of the total number of successful candidates is from Karnataka, with as many as 4,397 candidates from Karnataka securing ranks. 39% of the successful engineering candidates also belong to the state. There has been a slight drop compared with the previous years, in the number of candidates in the state fulfilling eligibility norms, with 15,913 candidates qualifying for the seat selection process in 2013 as far as engineering stream is concerned.
“A paper on the English language has been introduced for the first time as an eligibility norm to for securing a rank in the medical courses. 235 (out of which only two hailed from two from Karnataka, both from urban areas) candidates (1.5%) could not secure the requisite marks though they have the secured 50% minimum in Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers,” he added.
"I have worked extremely hard. I knew that I would do well, but the first rank definitely came as a surprise. Hard work is a given, but my parents and teachers taught me how to believe in myself. I haven't decided on a college yet, as I am waiting the AIIIMS results. I appeared for the NEET UG and secured an All India Ranking of 115.
