Karnataka polls: Mandya sugar turns bitter for Congress?
Mandya: In his strongest attack yet on the ruling BJP on the issue of corruption, AICC Vice-President Rahul Gandhi delivered his longest and most impassioned speech these elections in the sugar city of Mandya on Wednesday.
Addressing a highly responsive crowd, that had turned out in huge numbers to hear him despite the scorching sun — which saw many of them use their chairs as umbrellas — Gandhi accused the BJP government of mortgaging the legislative assembly to the mining mafia of Bellary.
However, casting a shadow on what could have been a Congress resurgence in MandyaMaddur-Srirangapatna was the obvious bad blood between former chief minister S.M. Krishna and former union minister and actor M.H. Ambareesh, contesting from Mandya.
It was on full display on Wednesday, with the body language of both the leaders during the election address of Gandhi saying it all. The two leaders didn’t shake hands and failed to make eyecontact even when they were standing right next to each other.
As Gandhi arrived at the venue at 12.45 pm and clambered up the podium, Ambareesh, waving to the mammoth crowd failed to make way for Krishna. Gandhi tapped the star on his shoulder and asked him to allow the elder statesman to be able to take his seat.
