Kabini water for Mysore soon
Mysore: The first phase of the Kabini water project that is likely to bring an additional 60 MLD of water to the city, could be officially launched in 10 days, according to soures.
The trial run of the project began in November and the city has so far received 30 MLD of Kabini water that has been supplied mainly to the new layouts under the Mysore City Corporation, they add. “Right now Mysore is managing with the seepage water. We will release 100 cusecs of water per day to it only once the project is officially launched,” say Kabini sources.
The Union government is meeting 80 per cent of the cost of the Rs 108 crore project, and the state government and the Mysore City Corporation, 10 per cent each. Although the Union government has released Rs 65 crores of its share of Rs 87.05 crores, and the state government its share of Rs10.8 crore, the MCC has not yet released an equivalent amount. "Unless it does, the Centre will not release the rest of its share," warn sources. The Kabini water project that is expected to bring 180 MLD more water to the city, is being taken up in three phases, each supplying 60 MLD. Work on the first phase began in June 2009 and although expected to be completed in June 2011, it was delayed and given a new deadline of June 2012. It was finally completed by November 2012.
Mysore which has 1,76,000 water connections, is currently making do with about 200 MLD of water a day. With the groundwater table falling, the 1498 borewells are providing 50 per cent less water than usual, adding to its water troubles.
