K’taka to press pm to stay SC cauvery order
Fearing backlash from people in the Cauvery basin, Karnataka on Saturday did not make its stand public on complying with the Supreme Court direction of releasing 9,000 cusecs. However, it was learnt that the state ensured more water reached the Mettur measuring station. Accord-ing to sources, nearly 7,000 cusecs of water is going to Tamil Nadu vis-à-vis the 4,500 cusecs of water going till a couple of days back.
Earlier in the day, the state government appealed the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to give a interim stay on the September 19 order of Cauvery River Authority. The decision was taken at a floor leaders’ meeting presided over by chief minister, Jagadish Shettar. This decision was taken in the backdrop of the Apex Court’s direction on Friday which directed the state to implement the CRA order. “We will press the Prime Minister to order an interim stay. Based on their response, we will take a decision on future course of action,” chief minister Jagadish Shettar said.
