K’taka builder shoots himself

A 42-year-old builder and co-producer of the Kannada movie Veerappan Attahasha allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his licensed revolver in his farm house in Lakshmipura under Tavarekere police limits on Saturday night.

The police said V. Srinivas, son of Venkataram, a resident of Rajaji Nagar, used his 0.32mm revolver and shot himself in the head from point blank range. Srinivas is survived by his wife S. Rekha (30) and two daughters, Shalini (5) and Sanjana (9). He was running a land development firm in Jayanagar 4th Block.

According to his wife’s statement to the police, Srinivas was depressed for the last three years and used to regularly take sleeping pills before going to bed.

As per the preliminary investigation, on Saturday, Srinivas dropped his wife and mother near Moodalapalya Circle and asked them to head to Lakshmipura by bus. Later, he returned home and took his licensed revolver and told his daughters and in-laws that he was leaving for Mysore.

On Saturday evening, Srinivas headed for his farm house, which is his ancestral property, and made calls to several people. Around 7 pm, he called up his business partner Ravi and asked him to come to the farm house, but Mr Ravi refused since it was already late. Later, he called two of his other friends — Jagadish and Babu — and asked them to come to the farm house, and said he would wait for them.
Around 8.30 pm, when Mr Ravi called on Srinivas’ cellphone, it was switched off.

He then grew suspicious and went to the farm house at 11 pm to find Srinivas lying in a pool of blood next to his Mercedes Benz (KA 51 MM 101). He immediately informed the police who recovered the body from the spot.

A police officer said that Srinivas had called his three brothers and also met his older sister Manjula at Nagarabhavi on Saturday and spoke to her for half an hour. However, he never mentioned anything to them. Police suspect that the incident could have occurred some time between 7 pm and 10 pm.

According to police, Mr Srinivas had made several calls to a particular mobile number before killing himself and it is suspected that it could be a case of an illicit relationship. “However, we are investigating the case from all angles and will be able to establish the actual reason only after full investigation”, said the police officer.
