JD-U, BJP deal stuck on 1 seat
The ruling JD(U)-BJP combine in Bihar is close to clinch seat-sharing adjustment, with the last-minute delay being attributed to one seat on which the saffron party is making claim. The two parties will hold talks on swapping of seats based on delimitation only if they mutually agree, else the idea is likely to be dropped.
A final announcement on seat adjustment is reported to have been held up following the BJP’s contention that the two parties had friendly contest on three seats in the 2005 state elections, while the JD(U) is maintaining that there were only two such seats.
The Bihar in-charge of the BJP Dharmendra Pradhan along with senior leader Sanjay Jha are holding talks with the Rajya Sabha member of the JD(U) R.C.P. Singh in Delhi.
After the conclusion of talks between these leaders the central leadership of the two parties would hold talks before announcing the final seat adjustment shortly, stated a senior JD(U) leader.
The JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav on Saturday told reporters that “a broad agreement has been reached between the two parties on seat adjustment”.
“It has been discussed today and a decision is expected tomorrow. A formal announcement is likely in a day or two,” he added. On possibility of swapping of seats based on the changed demography following the delimitation exercise, a senior JD(U) leader stated that the two parties have drawn their respective lists of seats for swapping but that would be taken only if there is a mutual agreement.
“In the event of agreement not reached by the parties they will contest on the basis of the 2005 seat adjustment,” added the leader.
