Jaya tells EC to ensure safe polls
Charging the ruling DMK with unleashing violence ahead of Wednesday’s Assembly polls in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa on Tuesday urged Election Commission and state police to ensure free and fair elections.
Recalling incidents of alleged poll-time violence by DMK, she said her party candidate for Madathukulam constituency C. Shanmugavelu and some others had sustained serious injuries when they were “attacked” by DMK men after AIADMK workers objected to their “distributing money” to voters.
“Further, DMDK functionary Asokan was killed by DMK men at Pennagaram,” she said in a statement here.
“I request the Election Commission, state Chief Electoral Officer and DGP to depute more number of central paramilitary forces to all parts of the state and ensure there are no untoward incidents. Voters must cast their votes without fear and the Election Commission and others should ensure this,” she said. —PTI
