Jaya rubbishes Karuna’s EC remark

Asserting that the election commission was enforcing the model code of conduct in all seriousness, AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa ridiculed Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for faulting EC and said an “undeclared emergency prevailed only in his rule”.

“It is in his rule, there is emergency for everyone,” she said giving a clean chit to the election commission for strictly enforcing the model code of conduct. Ms Jayalaithaa was talking to mediapersons in front of her Poes Garden residence before embarking upon her campaign in the city.
The Chief Minister had even gone to the extent of claiming EC’s restrictions creating an undeclared emergency in the state.
His son and deputy chief minister M. K. Stalin too charged that the election commission of India was deliberately acting hard against the ruling DMK, under the pretext of strictly enforcing the model code of conduct for the April 13 elections.
She indicated that the EC had been enforcing the stringent norms after a long time and it was firm in preventing any violations.
“I do not foresee any such possibility. Not at all,” Ms Jayalalithaa declared when asked about the possibility of a hung Assembly in the state. On the opinion poll, aired on a TV channel, which said AIADMK would win 165 seats, she said the TV channel had “rightly indicated” that the AIADMK would win and that there was no likelihood of a hung Assembly.
“But in my own assessment, our alliance will win not less than 218 seats. So there is no possibility of a hung Assembly. I am confident that the AIADMK will get majority and form government on its own,” she said.
She brushed aside a question on reports that her ally and DMDK chief Vijayakanth beat up his party candidate during campaigning in Dharmapuri. “It is time for me to move out for the campaign.”
Meanwhile, the DMK claimed that AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa and DMDK founder Vijaykant have flouted the model code of conduct by making personal attacks against TN Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and his family.
They also asked the Election Commission to take suitable action against them.
In a four-page complaint lodged with the Chief Electoral Officer, the party claimed that the AIADMK leader was “making serious and highly objectionable allegations” against its leader Mr Karunanidhi and his family. The DMK alleged that Vijaykant also was making similar “malicious and false allegations against its leader.”
These were “serious, unverified, false and unscrupulous allegations,” the party said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
